Artists held, police break up Mahila Congress rally
Police scuffled with a group of artists who were protesting the violence in Nandigram at the venue of the 13th Kolkata film festival.
Holding placards decrying the West Bengal government's 'apathy' and 'failure to prevent a bloodbath' in Nandigram, a group of artists, writers and poets took out a procession from the nearby Academy of Fine Arts.
As they neared the Nandan complex, the festival venue, the police stopped them and a scuffle broke out, police said.
Police used lathis to prevent another procession by Mahila Congress members who tried to break a cordon near the festival venue.
Film director and actor Aparna Sen and theatre personality Shaoli Mitra were also in the procession but left the area earlier.
The actors arrested were Parambrata Chattopadhyay and Didipta Chakraborty, police said.
The Nandigram issue rocked the festival venue last night too when five Trinamool Congress leaders, including two MLAs, were arrested when they tried to obstruct Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharjee's convoy after the inauguration of the film festival.
