Army to go ahead with next edition of civilian Siachen trek

Brushing aside objections raised by Pakistan, the Army has decided to press ahead with second edition of the civilian mountaineering and trekking expedition to Siachen Glacier in October-November this year.

NEW DELHI: Brushing aside objections raised by Pakistan, the Army has decided to press ahead with second edition of the civilian mountaineering and trekking expedition to Siachen Glacier in October-November this year.

The exercise, which has become an annual ritual now, enters its second year, and will see a bunch of civilians undertaking a trek to the hostile terrain. Known as the worlds highest battle-field, Siachen has seen the Army maintaining a permanent presence in the region since 1984 to ward off threat from Pakistan.

Even before the planned Siachen trekking kicks off, the Army will take out its own expedition to the glacial heights of Khatling on the Indo-Tibetan border in Uttarakhand later this month.

'The Siachen trekking expedition this year is in its planning stage and we are determined to take civilian mountaineers to the Glacier this year. Khatling expedition by the Armys 15 Mechanised Infantry Regiment will take place from June 25 to July 7,' an Army headquarters source said.

The two expeditions are meant to show to the international audience that Indian troops hold both the Siachen and Khatling glacial heights and neither Pakistan nor China were anywhere near the two Glaciers.

Amid reports of frequent intrusions by Chinas Peoples Liberation Army into the Indian territory along the Indo-Tibetan border, the Khatling expedition would leave imprints of the Army teams visit to the glacier.
