Army engineers build bridges within a day in Jammu, Poonch

JAMMU: In less than 24 hours, teams of Army engineers have re-built two bridges in Poonch and Jammu districts of flood-hit Jammu and Kashmir.

The Dorungli Bridge, a part of which was washed away on September 6 in flash flood, was made operational by this afternoon. This bridge is the only link between Poonch and Rajouri.

"The Indian Army's Engineers Unit swung into action and started the re-construction work this morning and made the bridge operational by afternoon," a senior Army officer said.

One Task Force of Army Engineers and troops from Poonch Brigade, along with the Border Roads personnel, made the bridge operational in the shortest possible time, he said.

Since the breakdown of the other bridge over Poonch River, the Sher-e-Kashmir bridge, the people of Poonch were completely cut off from the rest of Jammu region.

In another such example, Army engineers installed a 150-metre Baily bridge on Tawi river in Jammu, to ensure connectivity with 47 villages which were cut off by the floods, he said.

The bridge was completed in just a day and people stuck in Tawi Island villages were very happy and thanked Army for the speedy installation of the bridge.
