Army chief: Pakistan going beyond degree of deterrence

Army chief General Deepak Kapoor on Wednesday said Pakistan's efforts of increasing its nuclear strength was a matter of concern and that Islamabad was going well beyond the degree of deterrence.

PUNE: Army chief General Deepak Kapoor on Wednesday said Pakistan's efforts of increasing its nuclear strength was a matter of concern and that Islamabad was going well beyond the degree of deterrence.

"There is a difference between having a degree deterrence, which is required for protection, and going beyond that. If the news reports of (Pakistan) having 70 to 90 atomic bombs are correct, then I think they are going well beyond the requirement of deterrence," said Gen Kapoor, who was speaking during his visit to the army's Artificial Limb Centre (ALC) at Wanowrie in Pune.

Reacting to the reported violation of the Indian airspace by the Chinese, Gen Kapoor said such incursions would continue until the confusion over the Line of Actual Control (LAC) remains. "There are different perceptions about the LAC," he said.

According to news reports, two Chinese helicopters violated the Indian airspace on the Indo-China border near Leh. Gen Kapoor said the number of such incursions so far this year is almost the same as last year. "This year, there were 21 incursions in June, 20 in July and 24 in August."

Asked about the steps army was taking to tackle the H1N1 flu in Pune, which is the epicentre of the disease, Kapoor said the army will extend full support to the civilian authorities in this regard.
