Army Brigadiers to be re-employed for 2 yrs after retirement

NEW DELHI: Brigadiers in the Army will now be re-employed in the force for two years after retirement.

The Defence Ministry took the decision last month as a possible solution to offset the officers' shortage, which stood at over 11,000 in the Army. The current sanctioned officer strength is just over 46,000.

Under the policy, willing Brigadiers, who retire at the age of 56, would be re-employed in suitable posts for two more years till the age of 58.

"This move is to enable us to use the services of the Brigadiers, who had put in long service in the Army and gain from their experience," an Army officer said.

Hitherto, officers up to the rank of Colonels were only provided the option to be re-employed after they retire at the age of 54 to continue in service for two more years.

This policy was reviewed to include the Brigadiers too in the list of officers, whose services could be used after their retirement, officials said.

Also, Brigadiers would now form 10 per cent of those re-employed by the Army, which now has about 900 Brigadiers.
