APEDA signs MoU with WB
APEDA on Monday inked a MoU with the West Bengal government to set up a perishable goods cargo complex in Haldia at a cost of Rs 5.11 crore.
According to Mr Bhattacharjee, “setting up of the cargo complex would help West Bengal export various agri/horticulture products like flowers, potato, lichi and mango through the Haldia and earn foreign exchange”.
“We were planning to set up such a complex and I am pleased APEDA has come forward to set up the complex at Haldia,” the chief minister said before leaving for Delhi to attend a meeting convened by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on battling terrorism.
Mr Bhattacharjee said the demand for potato, lichi, mango, banana and pineapple in Australia, Russia, Japan and China had increased in recent years. “We would be able to earn substantial forex by exporting such products.”
APEDA chairman K.S.Mani said the proposed complex would come up on 4 acres near the Haldia docks and would take a year to complete. “This will be the country’s first goods cargo complex to export perishable goods,” Mr Mani claimed.
“Not only West Bengal, adjoining states like Bihar, Orissa and Jharkhand would also be able to store their agri and horticulture products at the cold chain for the purpose of export, Mr Mani said.
The proposed complex will have one chamber of 500 MT of potato storing capacity and two chambers with the capacity of 50 MT each to store mango. There will be two other chambers of 50 MT capacity each to store frozen marine products.
