AP demands Rs 71,000 cr from Centre

On the lines of the aid announced by the Centre for farmers of Vidarbha region, Andhra Pradesh on Thursday demanded from the Union Government a Rs 71,000 crore package to bail out the farm sector in the state.

NEW DELHI: On the lines of the aid announced by the Centre for farmers of Vidarbha region, Andhra Pradesh on Thursday demanded from the Union Government a Rs 71,000 crore package to bail out the farm sector in the state.

In his meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh here, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajashekhara Reddy put forth the demand for the Rs 71,000 package for helping the farmers in 16 districts of the state.

After the meeting, Reddy told reporters that Rs 60,000 crore had been demanded for improving the irrigation system alone and the remainder was to boost the agriculture sector in the state that is ridden with farmers' suicides.

"We are demanding the package in the interest of the farmers of the state. It is on the lines of the Vidarbha package," he said.
