Antony calls for time-bound measures to ensure coastal security

Defence minister AK Antony has expressed the need to take time-bound decisions and implementation of coastal security measures including procurement.

While reviewing the progress of coastal security measures undertaken by Navy, Coast Guard and other related ministries like shipping, animal husbandry & fisheries, home (border management) and petroleum, in a high level meeting held late last week, defence minister AK Antony has expressed the need to take time-bound decisions and implementation of coastal security measures including procurement. He also called for regular monitoring of the progress by concerned agencies for increased vigilance and response to threats from sea.

The minister also highlighted the need for creation of maritime boards by coastal states, as these boards will function as coordinating agencies for coastal security and other related issues.

The meeting also discussed issues like port security, including minor ports, coastal security scheme, dedicated marine police in the states, progress of registration of fishing vessels, provision of ID cards for fishermen and licensing of fishing vessels.

Besides the minister, the meeting was attended by cabinet secretary, chief of naval staff, defence secretary, secretary shipping, secretary border management, secretary fisheries, DG coast guard and other senior officials.
