Anti-Sterlite protest: DMK demands Tamil Nadu CM's resignation

NEW DELHI: DMK working president MK Stalin and other party leaders today staged a protest outside Tamil Nadu Secretariat against violence that broke out during anti-Sterlite protest in Tuticorin on May 22.

MK Stalin demanded the resignation of Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, reported Times Now.

MK Stalin and several other leaders were later detained by police for staging protest outside the Secretariat.


"Even after death of 12 innocent people, no action has been taken against the culprits. CM has become ineffective. He did not bother to visit the dist & meet the people. Therefore, we demand that CM must resign immediately, DGP Rajendran must resign too," said Stalin.

According to ANI, as many as 13 people died in police firing during protests on May 22 and more than 70 people got injured.

Meanwhile, DMK has also called for a state-wide bandh on May 25 to condemn the police action and demand closure of the Sterlite copper smelter plant.

According to ANI, a Tamil Nadu-based advocate has moved a plea in Delhi High Court seeking its direction to NHRC to visit the location and conduct a separate inquiry into the violence, instead of asking for a report from state police and the chief secretary of the state. The court is likely to hear the petition tomorrow.
