Anti-POSCO activists mistakenly detain dredging co workers
Anti-POSCO activists detained seven members of a dredging company for over 17 hours near Paradip thinking them to be employees of the South Korean steel giant and released them after a warning.
According to POSCO Pratirodh Sangram Samiti president Abhay Sahu, the activists last evening took seven members of a dredging company who were about to start excavation at the Jatadhari river mouth - the place where POSCO had proposed to set up its port.
Activists of the Samiti picked up the seven thinking them to be employees of the steel major, he said.
Sources, however, later confirmed that those who were held captive by the activists were engaged by Indian Oil Corporation which had a project in Paradip.
The Paradip police said it had not received any complaint from the oil company or from the dredging firm.
Anti-project activists released the seven only after it was confirmed that they were not working for POSCO with a warning that they should never enter the area, they said.
The anti-project activists had earlier abducted three South Korean nationals when they attempted to start survey work at the proposed project site.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today condemned the activities of the Samiti, warning them not to take the law into their own hands by holding people in captivity.
