Ansari laid to rest in home town amid tight security

Gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari was buried in his native town Yusufpur amid tight security on Saturday with tens of thousands of supporters and locals turning up for the funeral procession.

Ansari's mortal remains had been brought from Banda to Ghazipur late on Friday night and were placed at his family house in Yusufpur in Mohammadabad. He was laid to rest in his ancestral Kali Bagh burial ground.

There was heavy deployment of police and paramilitary forces to ensure the funeral took place without any untoward incident.


The police had to struggle a bit to contain the hordes of people who wanted to enter the cemetery to offer soil to the grave as part of rituals.

Ghazipur MP and Mukhtar's older brother Afzal Ansari, too, appealed to people to maintain peace.

Ghazipur district magistrate Aryaka Akhoury said the funeral was videographed and action will be taken against those who raised slogans since the Model Code of Conduct was in place.

Overall, the funeral took place peacefully.
