Another rape victim attempts suicide outside UP police office

LUCKNOW: A 17-year-old gangrape victim tried to kill herself on Monday by consuming poison outside the office of the senior superintendant of police (SSP) Varanasi along with her parents for alleged “loopholes” in the ongoing investigation against the rape accused.

The police, however, has refuted her claims and has said that two accused — one for rape and another, a ticket collector Jamil hailing from Ghazipur — have both been arrested.

“The claims that there have been irregularities in the investigation hold no water since both accused have been arrested by the police,” Prabhakar Chaudhary, SSP of Varanasi, told ET.


The victim had made allegations against Jamil of selling her in Mumbai and Jamil’s wife had been contesting these claims even though he had been arrested.

Chaudhary said that the girl had often run away from her place and a diary belonging to her seized by the police has descriptions by her of not wanting to stay with her father who wants to get her married. He said the extreme step was taken to prevent Jamil’s wife from pursuing the case of proving him innocent.

The girl along with her parents were found lying unconscious 100 m away from the station after consuming rat poison. They were rushed to Banaras Hindu University and their condition was stable as of Monday evening.

The act of attempted suicide comes exactly a week after a 23-year-old rape victim immolated herself outside the city SP’s office in Unnao and days after another 23-year-old was burnt to death by her rape-accused in Bihar’s district of Unnao.
