Another minority commission member demits office, panel strength reduced to two

NEW DELHI: One more National Commission for Minorities (NCM) member demitted office today on account of completing his tenure, reducing strength of the panel to just two vis-a-vis the mandated seven.

Praveen Davar, who was appointed to the Commission during the UPA-II regime, demitted office after completing his three- year stint with the body. Davar's term technically ends tomorrow which is a public holiday.

Four members of the panel had retired between September 9, 2015 and December 1, 2016. The posts continue to remain vacant.


The Commission is now left with strength of two-- chairman Naseem Ahmad and member Dadi E Mistry.

Ahmad and Mistry will complete their tenures by March 3 and March 9 this year, respectively.

Davar used to deal with complaints from around 20 states as well as Union Territory of Delhi. With him demitting office, Ahmad and Mistry will have to share the workload, a source said.

Officials at the Ministry of Minority Affairs, which is the competent authority, could not be reached for their comment.
