Anna supporter sets self on fire near Kisan Ghat, critical
He was rushed to LNJP Hospital with 90 per cent burns. The man, Dinesh Yadav, had come from Bihar to support Anna's movement against corruption.
However, the police tried to downplay the incident, claiming the victim had no links with Anna's campaign. "A PCR call was received around 4:10 pm from Kisan Ghat that a man had tried to immolate himself. The Daryaganj police was informed and cops rushed to the site," a police officer said.
Some constables standing nearby rushed to save the man, but he was already enveloped in flames. The cops threw a blanket around him and rushed him to hospital. Dinesh's condition is critical and he is not fit to give a statement, said the police.
Dinesh was not alone at the time of the incident. There were other protesters near Rajghat. He was wearing an Anna cap and carrying a stick, eyewitnesses said. Police said they are trying to contact his family. The fire department said the man was taken to the hospital even before they could reach the site.
A doctor attending on the patient said the man had suffered over 90 per cent burns and chances of his survival are bleak. Medical superintendent of LNJP hospital said the police brought the patient around 4:40pm and the hospital has no details about the patient. Deputy Commissioner of Police, Vivek Kishore, refused to comment on the matter.
India Against Corruption, which is spearheading the anti-corruption campaign, posted on its Facebook: "A person has tried to self-immolate a short while ago. Taken to hospital. Anna Hazare appeals to all to maintain peace.
