PATNA: Mathematician Anand Kumar today stressed that time has come for the country to refocus on teachers to ensure quality education to students.

"Good teachers are the scarcest thing today and that should be a matter of concern for all. Teaching is an art and the toughest thing. Not everyone can become a teacher, but a teacher can certainly contribute to the society in more ways than one," he said while speaking at a function on the eve of Teacher's day at Ramanujam School of Mathematics, better known by the name Super 30.

Kumar said, policy makers must ponder as to why people were no more interested in becoming teachers and what could be done to draw the best of the lot to the world's most pious profession.

"After all, a teacher is given status of ahead of God, as it is the teacher who gives a child the concept of god," he added.

"Right from the day a child steps into school, he or she needs a teacher to nurture him, teach him the lessons of life and the world. Ask anyone - rich or poor - and they all want good teachers for their wards, but the problem is nobody wants their children to become teachers," he added.
