An attempt to encroach upon states’ powers, says Mamata Banerjee
“According to the Constitution, this is a state subject, but the states were never consulted. This is a deliberate attempt to encroach upon the states’ powers.

Banerjee had earlier remained silent about the move which was in sharp contrast to the CPM-led government in Kerala that had vociferously protested against the Centre’s decision and threatened to take the legal route as well.
“According to the Constitution, this is a state subject, but the states were never consulted. This is a deliberate attempt to encroach upon the states’ powers.
This is not only unconstitutional, but unethical too. On the issues such as dealing with animal markets, livestock and so on, the state has exclusive powers. So, we are opposed to such a rule and will not accept this. We would fight it legally, and if necessary, we would appeal to the Constitution Bench,” said Banerjee.
BJP state president Dilip Ghosh, while commenting on Banerjee’s outburst, said, “It is a pre-planned move. Initially, she was silent because she wanted to cultivate a pro-Hindu image. But she always takes the lead in opposing the Centre. She cannot retreat politically. So, she was waiting for other states like Kerala and Tripura to react first.”
