We will take Northeastern states into confidence: Union Home Minister

Amit Shah: Working on a plan to remove all illegal immigrants
GUWAHATI: The Centre is working on a system which will not allow even a single illegal immigrant to stay in the country, home minister Amit Shah said at the 4th conclave of North East Democratic Alliance in Guwahati on Monday.

“Assam has expressed concern over the National Register of Citizens, as it feels several people have been left out. On the other hand, leaders of other smaller NE states have said those left out will infiltrate their states. I want to assure that not a single illegal immigrant will remain in Assam or enter any other state. We want to free not just Assam but the whole of India of illegal immigrants. We have a plan and we will work on it. We will take northeastern states into confidence,” Shah told the platform of non-Congress parties the BJP had floated.

A senior BJP leader told ET: “We have discussed the matter with the Union home minister and informed him that we will move the SC with a plea for NRC re-verification.” The SC had rejected Assam’s and Centre’s earlier pleas for conducting 20% sample re-verification of the draft NRC published on July 30, 2018, in districts bordering Bangladesh after NRC coordinator Prateek Hajela clarified that re-verification had been done.
