Amit Shah charge sheet: Congress expresses 'sense of satisfaction'
NEW DELHI: Congress today expressed a "sense of satisfaction" over the charge sheet against BJP President Amit Shah for allegedly violating the Model Code of Conduct by making an "objectionable" speech during campaigning for Lok Sabha polls in Uttar Pradesh.

"We have a sense of satisfaction that something which caused a major concern among well-meaning people is being pursued under the law of the land and is going in a satisfactory direction," Congress spokesperson Salman Khurshid said here, adding that "everyone" should be "happy" about it.

However, speaking to reporters at AICC here, Khurshid said he would not like to comment further on the matter as it was sub-judice.

A charge sheet was filed today in a Muzaffarnagar court by police against 49-year-old Shah for allegedly seeking votes on the grounds of religion, race, caste and community.

In Lucknow, another Congress leader, Raashid Alvi, said, "He (Shah) should be arrested and also resign as the president of BJP."

A case was registered against Shah by police for allegedly violating the model code following a direction from Election Commission, which had also banned the BJP leader from campaigning in Uttar Pradesh on April 4, 2014.

Shah had landed in a major controversy for allegedly saying that the 2014 Lok Sabha polls were an opportunity to seek "revenge for the insult" inflicted during the riots in Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh last year.
