Amit Chavda is new Gujarat Congress chief

Ending speculations, Congress High Command today appointed Amit Chavda as the President of the Gujarat unit of the party, replacing Bharatsinh Solanki.

Bharatsinh Solanki had put in his papers after being denied a ticket to Rajya Sabha.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi has appointed Amit Chavda, MLA, as the president of the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee in place of Bharatsinh Solanki, the party said in a statement.


While there was significant amount of discontent among the senior leaders of the party regarding Bharatsinh’s presidency ahead of assembly elections last year, High command had strongly backed Bharatsinh.

However In the post-election scenario, strong demands for a leadership change was gaining ground.

Chavda, six-time MLA from Ankalav in central Gujarat, is very popular among the Thakor Kshatriya communities.

Keeping in mind the caste equations Congress had to appoint an OBC candidate for the post post of president, as it had already appointed a Patidar Paresh Dhanani as the leader of opposition.

Congress had lost the 2017 Gujarat Assembly election but improved its tally to 77 from 60 in the 2012 elections.
