Ambani firm seeks Wakf board hearing

Mukesh Ambani controlled Antilia Commercial has urged the Maharashtra Wakf board to hear its plea before taking any decision on restoration of the land it had purchased three years ago.

MUMBAI: Mukesh Ambani controlled Antilia Commercial has urged the Maharashtra Wakf board to hear its plea before taking any decision on restoration of the land it had purchased three years ago.

Replying to the July 5 notice served by the board headed by controversial Congress leader M A Aziz, the company submitted a complete sequence of the land deal and specifically stated that it was not a Wakf plot. Ambani is constructing a huge mansion on the prime piece of land measuring 4,532 sq m.

Following complaints of large-scale illegal transfer of Wakf land across the state, the government had appointed a one-man committee comprising senior finance department official S K Qadri to probe into the transactions. In his report, Qadri had recommended to the government that immediate steps be taken for the restoration of Wakf land.

On the basis of the report, the state had asked the board to invoke provisions of Section 52 of the Wakf Act to restore Wakf land. Accordingly, the board had on July 5 issued a showcause notice to Antilia asking why the land should not be restored.

The row over Wakf land transactions has prominently figured in the ongoing monsoon session of the state legislature . BJP leader Nitin Gadkari launched a frontal attack on the government saying it had failed to protect Wakf land.
Taking cognisance of the charges, the CM had declared two separate probes into the remaining deals.
