With the entire Jammu and Kashmir state engulfed in violent protests over the Amarnath land transfer row, a top police official on Thursday held meeting with community leaders and appealed citizens to maintain communal harmony.

JAMMU : With the entire Jammu and Kashmir state engulfed in violent protests over the Amarnath land transfer row, a top police official on Thursday held meeting with community leaders and appealed citizens to maintain communal harmony.

"We ask people to maintain communal harmony and not to be misled by rumours spread by vested interests to escalate violence," DIG Jammu-Kathua range A Q Manhas said while addressing a meeting with a delegation here.

The members assured full support to the administration to rein in violence and asked police to take strict action against those who were trying to vitiate peaceful atmosphere by delivering provocative speeches.

Appreciating the role played by leaders and intellectuals in maintaining communal harmony, the DIG assured all help in maintaining peace and said those taking law in their hands would not be spared.

The members also met senior police officers and apprised them of problems being faced by the community. The authorities assured them of additional deployment of police personnel in sensitive areas.

The members said they are in constant touch with all social and political organisations including the Shri Amarnath Sangarsh Samiti and also visited different areas to take stock of problems being faced by the community.

The delegation included prominent leaders like Zahoor-ud-din, Choudhary Abdul Hamid, Talat Qazi and Ashaq Hussain Khan.

At least 21 persons including senior Hurriyat Conference leader Sheik Abdul Aziz were killed and hundreds were injured in police action during the last three days.

The state is marred by violent protests for and against the transfer of 40 hectares of forest land to the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board.
