Amarinder Singh puts in his papers

The Governor has accepted the resignation and asked Singh to continue till further orders.

CHANDIGARH: Accepting defeat of the Congress in the elections to the Punjab Assembly, Amarinder Singh resigned as Chief Minister of the state here on Tuesday afternoon.

Singh submitted his resignation to Governor S F Rodrigues in the Raj Bhawan here.

The Governor has accepted the resignation and asked Singh to continue till further orders, a close aide of the outgoing Chief Minister said.

Earlier, the CM sought to put the blame for the electoral debacle on the price rise, which he said may have turned the urban voters away.

The party fared badly in the urban areas while it performed well in rural areas like the Malwa region and strongly dismissed that anti-incumbency played a role in the drubbing, the CM said.

“Congress has done well overall. But in the urban areas price rise was perhaps a factor,” he told reporters here as Shiromani Akali Dal-BJP combine appeared set to form the next government.

The Congress will play the role of an “effective, constructive, aggressive and responsible Opposition and help keep the government on its toes,” he went on to say.

Slamming the Opposition alliance, Singh said the SAD-BJP rule would take the state 25 years behind.

“We had put Punjab on the high growth trajectory, but Akalis will take it back to square one. You will now have land prices falling and industry will hesitate to come here.”

He expressed disappointment at the party's performance in urban areas.

“I am yet to unravel the fact that why urban population has gone against us. The rural electorate was with us,” he added.

Meanwhile, Akali Dal leader Parkash Singh Badal seemed set for a fourth innings as the Chief Minister of Punjab.

His son and party leader Sukhbir Singh Badal on Tuesday said that Badal will be the next Chief Minister of Punjab as early trends indicated a win for the Akali-BJP combine in the Assembly polls.

“Parkash Singh Badal will be the Chief Minister,” Sukhbir told a private TV channel when asked if the junior Badal was in contention for the post.
