Allegations of unavailability of beds in Chennai is false: TN Health Minister

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Health Minister C Vijayabaskar on Monday denied allegations of non-availability of hospital beds in Chennai for Covid19 treatment.

This comes after television personality and actor T.V. Varadarajan had alleged that there are shortage of beds in Chennai for Covid-19 treatment.

The Health Minister went on to add that action would be taken against anyone who spread panic and misinformation during these times.


He said there were 5000 beds in government hospitals in Chennai and that additionally there were adequate beds in other Covid Care Centres too.

Further, he said the government has also asked private hospitals to increase their bed capacity for treatment of Covid-19.

Thos comes as the Tamil Nadu Covid-19 tally crossed 33,000 on Monday.

As many as 1562 new cases of the infection were reported in the state today, marking another day where the State surpassed its own record of the highest single day spike.

Of the cases on Monday, Chennai accounted for 1149 cases. In addition, 528 patients were discharged and 17 fresh Covid-19 deaths were reported.

The total recoveries in the State stand at 17,527 with a death toll of 286.

Chennai has witnessed 23,298 cases in all and continues to be the worst affected district in the State.
