The LG Polymers plant is owned by a South Korean battery maker, and was restarting operations for the first time since the lockdown when the gas leak happened at 3 am on May 7.

Reports indicate that the gas released from the plant is Styrene - a benzoic compound - that is causing people major suffering in the coastal Andhra Pradesh city.

Effect
As of now, eight people have died due to the gas leak, and hundreds have fallen sick, with breathing difficulties, rashes and vomiting.

Measures
Currently, an NDRF team is evacuating the surrounding areas with estimates pointing to roughly 5000 people affected by the leak, which could - in the long term - cause cancer in the victims.
