All Assam Students Union threatens to launch agitation against proposed Citizenship Amendment bill

The Assamese student body has decided to fan out and explain to people about CAB. Aasu has announced that anti CAB stir will start from November 4 onwards. The student body has also threatened to oppose construction of mega dams.

The Bill is aimed at making minority communities such as Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan eligible to apply for Indian citizenship.
GUWAHATI: With NDA government proposing to bring back, Citizenship Amendment bill (CAB) All Assam Students Union (Aasu) has announced that it will intensify agitation against the bill.

The student body has decided to fan out and explain to people about the CAB.

Aasu on Saturday had its general conference in Jonai in Dhemaji district. Aasu Chief Adviser Samujjal Bhattacharyya said, “The general conference has decided to oppose the CAB, we will fan out across the state and explain the people about the damaging effects of the CAB.”


Aasu has announced that anti CAB stir will start from November 4 onwards. The student body has also threatened to oppose construction of mega dams.

BJP has announced that that new Citizenship Amendment bill is being drafted and will be introduced after consultation with stakeholders in November.

The Bill is aimed at making minority communities such as Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan eligible to apply for Indian citizenship.

The bill was passed by Lok Sabha on January 8 last however due to bitter protest from several organisations in Northeast India and some NDA allies the bill was not tabled in Rajya Sabha.

BJP had promised in its manifesto for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, “We are committed to the enactment of the Citizenship Amendment Bill for the protection of individuals of religious minority communities from neighbouring countries escaping persecution.”(Eom)
