Al-Qaida's Iraq branch claims responsibility for suicide attack at US base in country's north

CAIRO: Al-Qaida's affiliate in Iraq says in a Web posting that it is responsible for Sunday's suicide truck bombing of a U.S. patrol base near the northern Iraqi town of Kirkuk.
The attack outside the gates of the U.S. base killed one U.S. soldier and wounded 18 other Americans.
In the Internet statement, the Islamic State of Iraq _ which is a coalition of insurgent groups lead by al-Qaida in Iraq _ says that an Iraqi from its Kirkuk Martyrs' Brigade stormed a recruitment center, shouted ``God is great'' and detonated his vehicle ``among a large number of crusaders.''
The authenticity of the statement, posted Tuesday on a Web site commonly used by militants, could not be independently verified.
Kirkuk is 290 kilometers, or 180 miles, north of Baghdad.
