Akalis win Nurmahal assembly by-poll

After facing reverses in the just-concluded Lok Sabha polls, the Shiromani Akali Dal-BJP combine in Punjab could draw some consolation from their victory in the Nurmahal assembly by-poll.

NEW DELHI: After facing reverses in the just-concluded Lok Sabha polls, the Shiromani Akali Dal-BJP combine in Punjab could draw some consolation from their victory in the Nurmahal assembly by-poll.

The ruling combine retained the seat for which by-election had been held on May 28. The constituency had fallen vacant because of the demise of SAD MLA Gurdeep Singh Bhullar in December last year. His widow Rajwinder Kaur Bhullar, who had been fielded by the alliance, defeated her nearest Congress rival Gurbinder Singh Atwal by 15,053 votes.

Out of 92,120 valid votes, SAD candidate polled 50,983 votes, while Congress nominee bagged the support of 35,930 people, officials said.

The other two candidates Harbans Singh Uppal of CPM and CPI(ML)s Hans Raj Pabwan bagged 3,356 and 1,851 votes, respectively, and had to forfeit their deposits.

Even though by-election results have little political significance as it has been observed that the candidates fielded by the ruling party or alliance normally get the peoples nod, the Akali Dal candidates victory in Nurmahal is certain to raise the morale of the Parkash Singh Badal government in the state.

The SAD-BJP alliance had suffered severe reverses in the Lok Sabha polls held last month. While Mr Badals outfit could win only four seats in the state, BJP saw its tally dipping to one from the previous figure of three. The state sends 13 MPs to the Lok Sabha.
