AIUDF suspends Hailakandi MLA Zakir Hussain Laskar from party for six years

The All-India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has suspended Hailakandi MLA Zakir Hussain Laskar from the party's primary membership for six years.

He is suspended due to alleged anti-party activities. The decision was taken by the party's executive committee.

Hafiz Bashir Ahmed Qasimi, the Administrative General Secretary and leader of the AIUDF Legislative Party has signed the suspension order.


In a press statement it stated that the suspension was initiated under provisions of the party’s constitution.

Keeping itself aloof from the by polls recently held in five seats of Assam, AIUDF is planning to contest at least 35-40 seats in 2026 assembly polls.

AIUDF MLA and general secretary, Rafiqul Islam stated that the party is eyeing to contest 34 to 40 seats.

The AIUDF currently holds 15 assembly seats. AIUDF has been constantly prodding Congress leadership for an alliance for the Lok Sabha polls however Congress did not yield. In the 2021 polls Congress and AIUDF jointly fought the assembly polls in Assam. In 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the Congress had won 3 seats while the AIUDF got one. The BJP had increased its tally from 7 to 9 in the last general elections.

Badruddin Ajmal, president of AIUDF was handed a humiliating defeat by Congress’s Rakibul Hussain from Dhubri seat in the Lok Sabha polls. Ajmal has been MP since 2009. There is hardly any representation of AIUDF in Lok Sabha as all its candidates faced defeat in the elections. Hussain defeated Ajmal by a record margin of 10,12,476 votes.
