The All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) has written a letter to the Chief Justice of India, requesting action on the alleged hate speech by Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma against Miyas. Bengali-speaking Muslims are often referred to as Miya Muslims.

Sarma had blamed Miyas for the inflated prices of vegetables in the state. He had said that the prices of vegetables sold by farmers in rural areas were not high. But the prices increased manifold when sold in Guwahati. This, he claimed, was being done by the Miya traders.

Muslims comprise 34% of the 3.12 crore population of Assam, of which 4% are indigenous Assamese Muslims and the remaining are mostly Miyas.
