Aircel Maxis case: P. Chidambaram gets interim protection from arrest till August 7

Delhi's Patiala House Court today granted interim protection from arrest to former finance minister, P Chidambaram in connection with INX Media case.

The interim protection from arrest was extended till August 7, 2018. The Court said, until then, no coercive action can be taken against P Chidambaram.

Earlier in the day, Supreme Court allowed Karti Chidambaram to travel to USA, France and UK from July 23rd to 31st for business purpose.


The central bureau of investigation on Friday, July,19, had filed a fresh chargesheet, naming P. Chidambaram as a co-accused in the Aircel-Maxis case. Sixteen other people, including government officials — both serving and retired, were also named in the chargesheet.

The senior Congress leader's role had come under the scanner of investigating agencies in the Aircel-Maxis deal of Rs 3,500 crore and INX Media case involving Rs 305 crore.

The Aircel-Maxis deal case, which emerged out of 2G spectrum cases, pertains to a grant by the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) to firm M/S Global Communication Holding Services Ltd for investment in Aircel.

Karti Chidambaram, being investigated by the Enforcement Directorate and the CBI in several cases, including the one relating to FIPB clearance to INX Media for receiving foreign funds to the tune of Rs 305 crore when his father was the finance minister, was earlier, too, allowed to go abroad.
