UDHAGAMANDALAM: Seven persons were injured when AIADMK and DMK men clashed over the byelection to the post of Vice-President of Wellington Contonment board on Saturday, police said.

Trouble arose soon after Vinod Kumar of DMK, which has four councillors in the board, was declared elected unopposed as Vice-President of the board. AIADMK which has three councillors did not contest the poll.

Since Vinod Kumar alone had filed the nomination, Brigadier Sureshkumar of Madras Regimental Centre, in his Capacity as President of the Board, declared him elected.

At this, some angry AIADMK workers pelted stones at the cars of DMK MLA D Ramachandran and former whip Mubarak and reportedly broke the window screens, police said.

In the ensuing fisticuffs between nearly 150 workers, three AIADMK men and four DMK workers and a reporter of DMK organ Murasoli were injured, they said adding all the eight had been admitted to the Government Hospital in nearby Coonoor.

The clashing workers dispersed after the arrival of Army personnel and also additional police.
