CHENNAI: Flaying the Tamil Nadu government's free colour TV scheme as a move to "deceive" the people of the state, AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa on Saturday said it would be better if the funds sanctioned for it were diverted for flood relief work in the state.

"A good government could only do it. But the present DMK government, instead of undertaking flood relief work, is claiming the free TV distribution scheme as its achievement," she said in a statement.

"Instead of fulfilling basic needs of the people like good roads, proper school buildings with black boards, bus terminus and public toilets, the government is repeatedly saying it would carry on with its TV scheme. It is an act of deceiving the people," she said.

She said the free TV sets distributed would be sold later as most of the houses already had one and there was no need for a second set, alleging the scheme would lead to malpractices.
