Ahead of Cabinet reshuffle, 12 ministers resign; Ravi Shankar Prasad, Prakash Javadekar among those who have quit

A slew of ministers including some senior ones have resigned ahead of the Cabinet reshuffle today.

Law and IT minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, health minister Harsh Vardhan, education minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank and environment minister Prakash Javadekar are some of the senior ministers who have quit.

Harsh Vardhan's role as health minister came under criticism from the opposition as India saw record cases and deaths during second wave of the Covid.


Ravi Shankar Prasad, who handled the Information Technology portfolio, resigned at a time when the social media giants have expressed their displeasure against the newly introduced IT rules and Twitter has not yet complied with them.

A total of 43 are expected to take oath as ministers in the reshuffle that is aimed at reinvigorating the Modi government as it grapples with challenges spanning Covid and economy.

Ashwini Kumar Choubey, MoS, Health and Family Welfare, has also resigned, along with Pratap Chandra Sarangi, MoS, Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries & MSME

Union Chemicals and Fertilizers Minister D V Sadananda Gowda is also among those who have resigned. Others who have quit are Minister of State for Education Sanjay Dhotre, Minister of State for Women and Child Development Debasree Chaudhuri and Minister of State Babul Supriyo.

The reshuffle will be the first in the second term of the Modi government.
