AGP holds meeting despite court barring it, re-elects Atul Bora as president

Guwahati: Despite a court in Guwahati barring regional party Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) from holding the General body meeting, the party held its meeting and re-elected Atul Bora as president.

Senior AGP leader Kamala Kalita told media persons, “We got the order by 12.45pm on Thursday, however by that time our meeting was over. Atul Bora was re-elected as president, there was only one nomination for the post.” Bora is also the agriculture minister.

Citing the violation of party’s constitution and Covid-19 guidelines, the court of Civil Judge number 3, Kamrup Metro stated, “I am of the considered opinion that holding of the meeting within short interval of mere 17 days prima facie appears to be illegal in view of Article 25(5) of Constitution of the AGP, which speaks about the furnishing of at least 30 days prior notice from to the date of holding meeting.”


The court observed a resolution in the meeting which again may be in contravention of clause 3 of order/notification dated 13.08.2020 issued by Assam state Disaster Management department, as well as being against the public policy.

AGP is a partner in the ruling BJP-led government in Assam. Former chief minister, Prafulla Kumar Mahanta said that the meeting was held in contravention of the constitution of the party. “Even messages sent digitally are accepted.”
