Agnivesh supports Vice Prez comments on US foreign policy

Social worker Swami Agnivesh on Saturday supported Vice President Hamid Ansari's comments on US foreign policy in West Asia.

NEW DELHI: Social worker Swami Agnivesh on Saturday supported Vice President Hamid Ansari's comments on US foreign policy in West Asia.

"If we really want peace, we need to speak the truth to the powerful. In this I support Hamid Ansari's statements about emerging security concerns in West Asia, particularly about the role of US," Agnivesh said.

Ansari had on Wednesday said that Washington's policy of "unilateralism" and "pre-emption" had lent "impetus to terrorism".

Addressing the inaugural function of 'International Conference on Peace through Reconciliation: the Asian Experience', Agnivesh expressed the need of a 'Common Minimum Programme'(CMP) for religious leaders to work for the moral issues facing humanity.

"If political parties can unite under coalitions on the basis of a CMP despite wide differences, why can't religious heads have a CMP of their own to work for human problems," he said.

An initiative of the 'United Religions Initiative' of Asia, the two-day conference is being be attended by delegates from all over Asia, including a 26-member delegation from Pakistan.
