Srinagar MP Ruhullah Mehdi called his exit a “decree of freedom” from a “deceitful, corrupt organisation,”
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla accepted the resignation of Srinagar MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi on Friday. The politician had earlier resigned from Lok Sabha and his party, National Conference, as differences brewed with the party leadership.

“Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, an elected member of Lok Sabha from the Srinagar Parliamentary constituency, has resigned his seat in Lok Sabha, and his resignation has been accepted by the Speaker with effect from November 3, 2026,” PTI reported, citing a notification issued by the Lok Sabha Secretariat.

During an address in Budgam on the 26th anniversary of his father Aga Syed Mehdi’s assassination. Ruhullah criticised Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and NC president Farooq Abdullah.

Mehdi called his exit a “decree of freedom” from a “deceitful, corrupt organisation,” according to PTI.

Following his comments, NC’s Sajjad Shaheed and Salman Sagar accused Mehdi of betraying his party and the electorate.

Sagar, a NC legislator from Srinagar, said Ruhullah had previously never criticised the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), claiming that something was being hidden.

Additionally, NC MLA from Banihal, Sajjad Shaheed, said Mehdi had failed as a minister and as an MP.

Further, Deputy Chief Minister of J&K, Surinder Choudhary, claimed the BJP was attempting to dismantle the NC.

With Ruhullah’s resignation, there are three vacancies in the Lok Sabha now. The other two include Shillong in Meghalaya and Basirhat in West Bengal, which were created following the deaths of MPs Ricky Andrew J Syngkon (Shillong) and Haji Nurul Islam (Basirhat).
