A senior Congress leader said by the end 2020 there was a move to replace Bora, but owing to the assembly polls the idea was shelved.
Assam Pradesh Congress Committee continued to be headless ever since Ripun Bora resigned following the party’s dismal performance in the recently concluded assembly polls.

“The selection of a new president was necessitated after Bora’s resignation. Two-three names have been shortlisted and soon the party will decide on a new PCC chief,” AlCC secretary Bhupen Bora told ET.

A senior Congress leader said by the end 2020 there was a move to replace Bora, but owing to the assembly polls the idea was shelved.

Another Congress leader said: “Some former MPs and ministers have moved AICC seeking changes in the state Congress leadership. Assam Congress is riddled with factionalism and big leaders are deserting the party due to frustration.”

He said: “Names of Lok Sabha MP from Nagaon, Pradyut Bordoloi, and Bhupen Bora are doing the rounds for the post.”

Just a few days ago, four-time Mariani MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi had quit Congress and joined BJP, claiming he won’t get a chance to become PCC chief because he was black and belonged to a backward tea tribe.
