After Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh Congress joins 'we want Rahul' chorus; more to join

The Chhattisgarh Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) on Sunday passed a unanimous resolution, calling for making Rahul Gandhi the new president of the party. Rajasthan PCC had done the same on Saturday. More PCCs are expected to take similar steps as part of a planned move before the filing of nominations from September 24 for the Congress presidential elections.

"Chhattisgarh Congress Pradesh Committee and Rajasthan PCC Congress have already made this proposal. If this proposal comes from other states too, then Rahulji should rethink this matter (on his "reluctance" to become the party chief). I think Rahulji would consider becoming the Congress president," said CM Bhupesh Baghel after the PCC meeting. State PCC chief Mohan Markam and others too expressed similar sentiments.

'We want Rahulji' resolutions - brought about by nudging the PCC office-bearers and delegates 'nominated' by the Congress high command and thus owing allegiance to the Gandhis-led leadership - are designed to advertise that Rahul Gandhi remains the most acceptable leader whether he agrees to be persuaded to become the party chief or chooses to stay as the de facto head sans accountability.


As directed by the party's central election authority, the pradesh returning officer in Chhattisgarh, incharge of Congress organisational elections, also got the PCC delegates to pass another resolution, authorising the 'incoming Congress president' to nominate the PCC president (which means that the new PCC chiefs will remain obliged to the new Congress president) and AICC delegates (who form electoral college that would elect the 12 electable CWC members in the event of a contest at the AICC session to be convened within three months of electing the new Congress president).
