After DMK walkout, UPA has become lame duck government: BJP

NEW DELHI: BJP today said the UPA government has become a "lame duck" after DMK walked out of it but was evasive about its stand on supporting any resolution against Sri Lanka on alleged human rights violations of Tamils there.

"UPA has become a real lame duck government now. UPA has become DPA (Divided Progressive Alliance) and has proved to be NPA (Non-Progressive Alliance)... Congress does not follow coalition dharma. Coalition is a compulsion for the constituents of this coalition," senior party leader M Venkaiah Naidu told reporters.

But despite strong criticism of the government and exhortations to the UPA constituents to pull out as it will also been held responsible for the "omissions and commissions, scams and scandals" of this government, the party did not spell out if it would support a resolution on the Sri Lankan issue.

Asked about the BJP's position, Naidu said, "This issue is a matter of foreign policy. The government has to decide. Let them make their stand clear."

BJP leaders maintained that they have not been sounded out by the senior ministers about any resolution as demanded by the DMK as a condition for supporting the government.

Asked if there is any resolution in the offing, Naidu said, "What resolution? Where? In politics you should not answer any ifs and buts. First let us know the government position. Then ask the Opposition."

Aware that the Congress-led government can still manage the majority with the help of SP and BSP, BJP said it has not intention of bringing down the government and insisting it will collapse on its own.
