After DMK, BJP announces stir seeking prohibition on Aug 10
CHENNAI: As various parties in Tamil Nadu upped the ante over the demand for prohibition in the backdrop of death of a Gandhian during an anti-liquor stir, BJP today announced its second state-wide protest in a month on August 10 pressing for implementation of the dry law.

The fresh agitation was being organised since there was no proper response from the AIADMK government to its earlier protest held on July 10 seeking prohibition, BJP state President Tamilisai Soundararajan said in a statement here.

"Seeking prohibition, we organised a protest across the districts of the State on July 10. Several party cadres were also arrested on that day. Such protests (by others) also saw the demise of activist Sasi Perumal," she said.

"But even after such protests there is no indication of prohibition from the government. Since there is no proper announcement or indication from the Government we have decided to reconduct our State-wide stir on August 10 also," she said.

DMK had already announced that it would organise protest seeking prohibition on August 10 in all the districts.

Prohibition issue has snowballed into a major political plank ahead of next year's assembly poll in the wake of the death of Perumal during a protest against a state-run liquor outlet on July 31.
