MUMBAI: After Aurangabad, Shiv Sena now wants to change the name of Islampur in Sangli district; it wants to rename the place to Ishwarpur, and has even threatened to start an agitation if it’s not done.

The move has come after a Hindutva organization, Shiv Pratisthan, had sent a memorandum to the Sangli collectorate demanding that Islampur’s name be changed to Ishwarpur. Shiv Pratishtan is headed by Sambhaji Bhide whose supporters have said that they would not rest until the demand is met.

Anandrao Pawar, Sena leader from Islampur, said that the demand for a change in name has been pending since 1986.

Shiv Sena has been actively pursuing the demand after Aurganzeb Road in Delhi was recently renamed Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Road to honour the late President.

Sena wants Aurangabad in Marathwada region to be renamed after legendary Maratha warrior Shivaji’s son, Sambhaji. Interestingly, while many backed the proposal to rename Aurangabad, there were differences over the choice of name with many wanting to change the name to Mughal King Aurangzeb’s elder brother Darah Shikoh.
