After Assam Police-demonstrators clash, CM says won't allow Waqf protests

Following clashes in Silchar over the Waqf Act, Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has prohibited street protests, suggesting legal recourse instead. The state government supports the Act and has moved the Supreme Court.

Guwahati: After clashes between demonstrators and Assam Police in Silchar town's Berenga area, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the government will not allow protests against the Waqf Act on the streets.

"There are people supporting and opposing the Act. All Assam Minorities Students' Union must go to court just like the state government moved the Supreme Court on Monday in support of the Act," the chief minister said on Tuesday.

Assamese declared compulsory for all official work in state

Assam governor has directed that Assamese should be used as an official language in the state and local languages can be used for official purposes in Barak Valley, the hill districts and the Bodoland Territorial Region.


The order stated that Assamese shall be used compulsorily in all official works.

Issuance of all government notifications, office memoranda, Acts, rules, regulations, scheme guidelines, transfers and posting orders shall be both in English and Assamese, the order stated.
