African National Congress to sign MoU with Congress

In an effort to further strengthen the historical ties between India and South Africa, the Indian National Congress and African National Congress (ANC) will tomorrow sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for enhanced cooperation in several areas.

NEW DELHI: In an effort to further strengthen the historical ties between India and South Africa, the Indian National Congress and African National Congress (ANC) will tomorrow sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for enhanced cooperation in several areas.

"We are signing an MoU tomorrow. The relations between the two organisations are historical and had started many, many decades back," ANC President Jacob Zuma said here today.

Zuma, who is leading an ANC delegation on a visit to India, met Congress President Sonia Gandhi today.

After delegation-level talks tomorrow, the two parties will sign an MoU tomorrow, which will focus on South-South cooperation and collaboration in a variety of areas.

"The two organisations are among the oldest in the world and we have been supported a great deal by the Indian National Congress in our struggle," Zuma said.

Zuma, who was addressing an interactive session organised by the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) Making a special mention of the influence of Mahatma Gandhi on the politics of South Africa, Zuma said, "he arrived in South Africa as a lawyer and South Africa changed him into a freedom fighter."

He noted that Gandhi gave the anti-apartheid activists in South Africa a non-violent means of struggle.

Zuma spoke about how India's freedom struggle inspired other countries that were under colonial rule to fight for independence.
