Afghan president calls for regional fight against terror

Afghan President Hamid Karzai called for intensified regional cooperation against terrorism in South Asia after the Mumbai attacks that killed more than 100 people.

KABUL: Afghan President Hamid Karzai called Thursday for intensified regional cooperation against terrorism in South Asia after the Mumbai attacks that killed more than 100 people.

The "attack in Mumbai once again reminds us of the brutality of the terrorists and the grave threat of terrorism that the entire humanity faces," Karzai said in a statement.

"Terrorists are especially challenging South Asia. A vigorous response to counter these terrorist challenges requires an even more intensified regional cooperation and coordination in all aspects," he said.

As the statement was released, a suicide car bomb in the Afghan capital killed four Afghan civilians near the US embassy.

It was the latest in a string of attacks linked to an insurgency led by the Taliban movement.

Indian officials say at least 100 people were killed and hundreds more wounded in the gun and grenade attacks by Islamic militants across India's financial capital that began late Wednesday.
