Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury writes to Om Birla; seeks early commencement of the winter session

The Congress floor leader in the Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury wrote to the Speaker Om Birla on Thursday, seeking early commencement of the winter session of Parliament to discuss issues such as the farmers’ agitation, Covid-19 vaccine and the economic situation.

The timing of the Parliament sessions is decided by the Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs and there are indications of the ruling establishment considering the winter session sometime in January, perhaps closer to the budget session.

Stressing that many important current issues warrant parliamentary discussion, Chowdhury said in his letter, “The most notable amongst them is the ongoing farmers' agitation, status/preparedness of Covid-19 vaccine, economic slowdown, unemployment scenario, the continuous face-off on the India-China border, unabated ceasefire violation on the Indo-Pak border.”


Ahead of the government-farmers negotiation on Thursday, the outcome of which would dictate the future political play, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi reiterated the party’s opposition to the new farms laws and said anything short of repealing these “black laws” would be “a betrayal” of India and its farmers.
