Adarsh scam: Summon to Vilasrao Deshmukh, Sushilkumar Shinde, Ashok Chavan

Vilasrao Deshmukh and Ashok Chavan are expected to file affidavits before the commission on Thursday.

MUMBAI: The two member Justice JN Patil judicial commission, probing Adarsh scam, has ordered former Chief Ministers Vilasrao Deshmukh, Sushilkumar Shinde and Ashok Chavan to present their cases to the commission on or before Thursday.

The judicial commission's order on this issue assumes importance since former Urban Development secretary and an accused in the Adarsh case, Ramanand Tiwari, has claimed in his affidavit that most of the clearances to Adarsh were given by Vilasrao Deshmukh.

The commission had initially asked Vilasrao Deshmukh and Shinde to appear only as witnesses. Both were given time till Tuesday (May 24) for this purpose, but they have not presented themselves yet. Vilasrao Deshmukh and Ashok Chavan are expected to file affidavits before the commission on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the Estate officer of defence department, Geeta Kashyap, told the commission that there was no documentary evidence to prove that Adarsh land belonged to the defence department. Geeta Kashyap has held the position since 2008.

She said there neither was any evidence to prove that Adarsh plot on block number 6 of Colaba was a part of defence nor was there any proof that this land was transferred to Maharashtra government's revenue department.

Major General SS Jog, who was the administrative officer for Navy's commanding officer, has said in an affidavit that in March 2000 the collector had asked the defence department to hand over this plot for a proposed housing society, but just a day after that Defence Estate Office had written a letter to government saying this land did not belong to defence.
