Action-packed year for Labour Ministry

It was truly an "aam aadmi" year for Labour Ministry which took a bold step to give social security to 43 crore workers in the unorganised sector.

NEW DELHI: It was truly an "aam aadmi" year for Labour Ministry which took a bold step to give social security to 43 crore workers in the unorganised sector and launched a health insurance scheme for BPL families along with steps for providing medical and disability insurance to the rural landless.

With a view to creating an efficient labour force, the Ministry also put major focus on vocational training by initiating measures for opening 1,500 new ITIs, modernising the existing ones and upgrading 500 others as centres of excellence.

Acting swiftly on the basis of suggestions of Sachar Committee Report on welfare of Muslims, the Ministry took steps to provide skills to the youth with lesser educational qualification in clusters having a significant population of that minority community.

To provide social security to workers in the unorganised sector, which accounts for over 90 per cent of the country's total work force, the Ministry introduced a bill in Parliament to ensure health insurance, life and accident insurance, maternity benefits and old age pension were extended to them.

Through the Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana, the Government intends to cover in the next five years all the six crore BPL families to carry out up to Rs 30,000 cashless transaction to meet medical expenses.

"These taken together are expected to provide a comprehensive safety net for the working poor," Labour Minister Oscar Fernandes said, summing up the major highlights of the year.
