Act tough with Pakistan for meddling in J&K: BJP to Centre

The BJP has asked the government to take “strong measures” against Pakistan’s continued interference in India’s internal affairs.

NEW DELHI: The BJP has asked the government to take strong measures against Pakistans continued interference in Indias internal affairs. The BJPs demand that the government do more than just register protest is in response to Tuesdays unanimous decision by the Pakistani Parliament to set up a panel to monitor human rights violations in Jammu and Kashmir and mobilise world opinion in support of the cause of right to self-determination of the people of the state.

Describing the resolution as a gross interference in Indias internal affairs, BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said: When Musharraf resigned, India treated the matter as Pakistans internal affair and did not comment on it. We demand reciprocity. The Pakistan National Assemblys resolution demanding plebiscite is totally unacceptable and condemnable.

The party has held the UPA governments short sightedness and lack of political will as the chief reasons for the current crisis in Jammu and Kashmir. Drawing attention to the events in the Valley, such as non-Kashmiri workers being forced to flee, the attack on the Uri power plant and the withdrawal of government servants from Kashmir, the BJP has asked the government to take firm action in favour of nationalist elements instead of being pressured by separatists.

The BJP said that over the past week, there has been a mass exodus of non-Kashmiri workers from the Valley. All non-Kashmiri workers irrespective of religion have been forced to leave under continuous threats by the separatists, the BJP spokesperson said. What the BJP has found even more disturbing is that instead of taking tough action against the separatists, the government has been organising extra buses to help the non-Kashmiri workers leave. It is not just the non-Kashmiri workers who have been forced to leave, non-Kashmiri students in engineering and medical colleges, more than 100 of them have also been forced out. What is worse is that the government has withdrawn as many as 1,000 state government employees from the Valley and sent them to Jammu, Mr Javadekar said.

The party has criticised the governments total lack of action and the cavalier attitude with which they have dealt with the burning of the national flag on August 15. Indias national flag was burnt on the August 15 at several places in J&K and the Union home secretary Madhukar Gupta has shockingly described the incidences as casual, the spokesperson said. In the same vein, the BJP expressed disbelief that government offices had observed a blackout by not putting on lights on Independence Day, it would seem that they were following the diktat of the separatists who had asked the Valley to observe a blackout on Independence Day.

Referring to the allegations of economic blockade, the BJP said that figures show that in July 2008 a total of 2,300 trucks reached the Valley, 300 more than in July 2007. Instead the party said that drivers and cleaners of 90 trucks carrying essential supplies into the Valley had been attacked.

The BJP stressed that the situation in Jammu and Kashmir is deteriorating because of the complete lack of vision and political will the Congress-led UPA government. Its omissions and commissions without any clear cut policy direction have led to this current situation and impasse, Mr Javadekar said.

The BJP has demanded an immediate negotiated settlement on the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board land issue. Further delay will harm the integrity of the country. The government must address the nationalist aspirations and not buckle under the pressure of separatists.
