Abhijit Mukherjee’s TMC entry: Didi’s revenge for Congress ‘playing spoiler’ in polls

The Opposition circles see, in the manner in which Mamata Banerjee on Monday admitted former Congress MP and the late Pranab Mukherjee’s son Abhijit Mukherjee into the TMC, her way of wreaking revenge on the Gandhis-led AICC leadership for their ill-fated attempt, in alliance with the Left and ISF, to trip the TMC supremo right when she was engaged in a do-or-die assembly election battle against the BJP.

“Abhijit Mukherjee is no match for his father Pranab Da. Yet, by admitting Abhijit in the TMC, not only has Banerjee sent a message to the Congress high command for foolishly trying to queer her electoral pitch but also took away half of the Pranab Mukherjee legacy from the Congress (the late President’s daughter is still a Congress functionary ). She (Mamata) has also sent out a loud message that not only the BJP MLAs but even the surviving Congress leaders can now knock at the doors of TMC,” said a CWC member.

Incidentally, Pranab Mukherjee and Mamata Banerjee had shared a tense political relation most of their time together as Congress colleagues and as Congress-TMC rivals-turned- allies- turned-rivals.


The TMC-BJP battle not only left the Bengal Congress with a humiliating zero in the polls, it also razed to the ground the traditional Congress strongholds including Adhir Ranjan Chouwdhury’s Murshidabad base, the late Ghani Khan Chowdhury-nurtured Malda and the late Priya Ranjan Dasmunshi cultivated Rajganj regions.
