Aarushi,Hemraj murder case: Shake-up in UP police as CBI takes over
With the probe into the murder of 14-year-old Aarushi Talwar and her family’s domestic help, Hemraj, getting nowhere under the stewardship of the UP police, the CBI swung into action by registering FIRs into the case.
Meanwhile, a highly defensive UP chief minister Mayawati, who had been pushed on the back-foot by the mishandling of the case by the state police, on Sunday ordered a complete shake-up in the zonal hierarchy. IG (Meerut Zone) Gurdarshan Singh, DIG P C Meena and Noida SSP A Satish Ganesh had to pay the price for botching up the initial investigation, triggering a popular outrage across the country.
I have removed Meerut Zone IG, DIG and Gautam Buddha Nagar SSP with immediate effect, UP chief minister Mayawati told a press conference in Lucknow on Sunday afternoon.
She said that she took the three senior police officials off the probe because her government did not want to be accused of trying to create problems in CBI investigations into the double murder. She claimed she had wanted a fair and honest probe into the case from the very beginning.
Inquiries by the UP police have revealed some very important facts. But, the family of the girl did not have faith in the probe conducted by the state police. So, my government has decided to hand over the case to the CBI, she said.
She said her government had recommended handing over of the probe to CBI without any delay and had, in fact, written a letter to the Centre in this regard. My government wants that CBI should be given all facilities to probe the case impartially to clear the picture, Ms Mayawati said.
